Ford Mustang: The Electric SUV Outsells the Car

For the first time since the name was introduced to the market in 1964, the best-selling Ford Mustang is not a car but an SUV. What’s more, the model in question is available exclusively with an electric powertrain. Did Ford manipulate the data, or have buyers simply lost their minds?
 

First and foremost, it’s important to understand that the Ford Mustang and the Mustang Mach-E SUV are two very different vehicles, despite sharing the same name. On one hand, there’s the sports car that most owners keep as a secondary vehicle, using it only when the weather allows. On the other hand, there’s an SUV that can be used daily and offers practicality on many levels. The real question we should be asking is why it took so long for the Mustang Mach-E to surpass the sales of the legendary Mustang car.

A Significant Rise in Popularity

I still remember how outraged Mustang enthusiasts were when the electric Mustang SUV was announced in 2019. However, the model has managed to build a solid reputation despite several recalls.

The Mustang Mach-E SUV experienced a significant surge in popularity between 2023 and 2024, with a substantial 27% increase in sales year-over-year. In total, 40,771 units of the model were sold last year. Meanwhile, the Mustang car saw a sharp 10% decline, dropping its sales to 44,003 units during the same period. While the difference is only a few hundred units, the Mustang Mach-E ultimately surpassed its sporty cousin in terms of sales.

A Trend That Will Continue?

The Ford Mustang car had record years in its early days, with several hundred thousand units sold annually. However, sales have since shown a downward trend, with a few exceptions. The Mustang is now more expensive than ever, and Ford offers several other high-performance models today, which wasn’t necessarily the case in the past.

It’s difficult to predict the future of the Mustang, but it’s likely that the sales gap, now favoring the Mach-E, will continue to widen.
